  • Hi -
I just found information about my grandfather who came to the United States from Norway. I did a google search with the location of his birth and your blog came up. If you have a moment, could you let me know a little about Jostedal, Sogn. Is it a big area? Would you happen to know of an area called (not even sure this is the name of an area, though): Fossen, Jostedal, Sogn
    or Jostedal kyrkje, Luster, Sogn.

    Thank you!
    Diane Fossen

  • My grandfather also came from this area. I would love to know more. I have seen your lovely photos and know I am probably related in some way. My grandfather came to South Dakota in 1905. Thank! Mar Kohl

  • My relatives (ancestors) family farm is just north of Gjerde. This was a lovely find to get a sense of Norway at/just before 1900: https://mashable.com/2016/12/10/people-of-sogndal/. Some of these are of Jostedal, some a valley over. The photos of Nils Olsson Reppen. I've read that this has been a sparsely populated valley (Jostedal/Gjerde), but that there's quite a bit of documentation (trying to find) and quite a bit about the farms with which families are associated.
